How can you be sure you are getting the right coverage for your business insurance?

Every business, regardless of size, has different potential liability and damage risks. It's important that you understand those risks and make sure your insurance covers you for them.

In recent years, insurance premiums have been lower, causing more businesses to look at price only when purchasing insurance for their business. While price is important, it is equally important to make sure that your potential liability exposures are covered too.

After all, you purchase insurance for a reason, so you want to make sure that if something happens and you have a claim, that you are covered for that loss.

Look For Professional Designations

Working with an experienced professional can help ensure that you are getting good insurance advice. Some designations to look for in an insurance professional include:

  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM)
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
  • Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)

Some Things to Consider

  • Does the agent have a professional claims advocate and does that person have access to opinions from coverage attorneys?
  • Obtain references from clients who have had difficult claims and ask about the agent's problem solving ability to settle the claim fairly.
  • All casualty policies are experience rated. Open claims tend to grow over time, adversely affecting your premium pricing. Does your agent periodically review claims with you to close those that should be closed?
